History

1771 - There's Something In The Water

Hawick, a small town in the Scottish borders, had already become established as the centre of the British knitwear industry, producing undergarments and hosiery using local lambswool washed in the pure local waters of the river Teviot for which much credit was (and still is) given for the unique finish on the knitwear produced there.

1874 - Good Work Means More Work

William Lyle and Walker Scott borrowed £1300 to form a small knitwear company in Hawick and began to manufacture high quality hosiery and underwear. The company expanded rapidly and achieved astonishing success in its early years.

1926 - A Bold Move

Lyle and Scott responded to market changes and started to manufacture knitted outerwear - twinsets, pullovers, cardigans and jackets for Golf. The company rapidly gained a reputation for style and quality and the business continued to grow.

1938 - A Revolution In Mens Underwear

Lyle and Scott revived its floundering underwear business and signed a franchise agreement with US company Coopers of Wisconsin to manufacture Y-Front trunks for men for the UK and European markets. Demand for Y-Fronts soared and turnover doubled.

1954 - Entente Cordiale

Lyle and Scott joined forces with top French fashion designer Christian Dior to produce an exclusive cashmere range designed by Dior and branded with both the Lyle and Scott and Dior names for the vital US and Canadian market.

1967 - The Eagle Is Born

Lyle and Scott launched their first Golf ranged inspired by the American Golfer Doug Sanders' love of bright colour schemes. The company commissioned their own motif for the range - the now famous golden Eagle, a symbol of Scotland and excellence and with strong Golf connotations. The choice of motif could not have been better and was immediately registered as a trade mark.

1968 - And The Rest Is History

Lyle and Scott attended their first Open Golf Championship with its striking new Golf range and very soon stamped an authority on the Golf market which has remained to this day.

1969 - Wear Eagles Dare

Lyle and Scott recruited Ryder Cup players Malcom Gregson and Brian Huggett to wear the new Golf range - and so began a long association with many of the world's top players; Gary Player, Tony Jacklin, Bob Charles, Bernard Gallacher, Sandy Lyle, Greg Norman, Ian Baker Finch, Andrew Coltart, Lee Westwood...to name but a few. All have worn the Golden Eagle to victory.

1975 - By Royal Appointment

Lyle and Scott was granted the Royal Warrant by appointment to HRH the Duke of Edinburgh.

1985 - Women Play Golf Too

To compliment the success of the Mens Golf ranges, Lyle and Scott launched its first ladies Golf range called La Femme. This more quickly established the company as a major player in the ladies Golf Market.

2000 - History Repeating

Lyle and Scott pays homage to past success with the launch of "Vintage" - an authentic trend collection inspired by the colourful Golf designs of the 70's and 80's - all bearing the distinctive Golden Eagle motif.

2002 - Eagle Evolution

Lyle and Scott revives its Brand Identity with a more modern interpretation of its script, a sharply defined Eagle and the use of Scotland to underpin its 128 years of heritage.

2004 - Onwards And Upwards

The Lyle and Scott brand continues to maintain a modern fashionable appeal worldwide whilst retaining the core values of quality products produced by a highly skilled and dedicated workforce.
