Shapes
Boxer shorts give the most room and the traditional cut. Trunks sit shorter in the leg and closer to the body, which works under a slim trouser. Boxer briefs sit between the two with a longer leg.
Waistbands and care
The waistband is where quality shows. A properly constructed elasticated waistband holds its tension for years, and a worn waistband is the usual reason a pair gets replaced.
