A softshell combines the warmth of a fleece and the weather protection of a shell in one fabric, with stretch built in.
What it does best
It suits cold, dry days with a risk of drizzle. It will not keep you dry in sustained rain the way a full shell will, and it is warmer than a windbreaker, so it is less useful in mild weather. The stretch allows a full range of movement, which is why the shape is used for golf.
