Weights and features
Lightweight padded jackets are packable and layer under a heavier coat in deep winter. Full weight puffers work as the outer layer without anything over them. A water resistant outer matters in this country, since insulation that gets wet stops insulating.
Length, hoods and care
Hip length is easier to move in; longer cuts hold more heat and cover more. A hood is worth having on an outer layer, and some are detachable.
