Which shape
A windbreaker is the lightest and most packable, built for wind rather than sustained rain. A harrington has a flat collar and check lining. A bomber is the cleanest shape over a shirt. A softshell adds warmth and stretch.
Layering, fit and care
Over a crew neck jumper or with a gilet underneath, these handle colder days than their weight suggests. The hem should finish at or just below the waistband. A water resistant finish can usually be refreshed with a wash-in treatment. See water resistant jackets.
