Heavyweight jackets combine insulation with a water resistant outer, which is what cold weather in Britain usually requires.
What to look for
Wadded and padded construction traps warm air for still, cold days. A water resistant shell handles cold that arrives wet. Hip length is easier to drive and cycle in; longer cuts hold heat better but restrict movement.
Layering and sizing
A merino or lambswool jumper underneath adds more warmth than a thicker jacket alone, and a gilet adds core insulation without bulk in the sleeves. Size with those layers in mind. See puffer jackets and, for milder days, lightweight jackets.
